The Collapse of the Old World: How Governments Fell and Corporations Rose in Cyberpunk Lore

The dystopian world of Cyberpunk 2077 did not emerge overnight. It was the product of decades of mismanagement, corruption, and relentless corporate ambition. Unlike a single catastrophic event, the collapse of the old world was gradual—a slow erosion of governmental authority accompanied by the ruthless rise of mega-corporations. Economic instability, political corruption, and corporate warfare set the stage for a society where money and technology became the ultimate arbiters of power. Understanding this history is essential to grasping the chaos and complexity of Night City and the wider world.

🇺🇸 The Collapse of the United States

1990s Economic Troubles

The seeds of collapse were sown in the 1990s. The United States suffered from a combination of internal corruption and external pressures. A clandestine coalition known as the Gang of Four—composed of influential agents from the CIA, NSA, FBI, and DEA—manipulated stock markets and government policy for personal gain. Meanwhile, foreign nations, frustrated with American hegemony, formed an economic bloc that excluded the U.S., triggering a global economic crash in 1994. The consequences were catastrophic: unemployment soared, homelessness exploded, and the nation’s infrastructure crumbled. Citizens began to lose faith in their government, seeing it as ineffectual, corrupt, and indifferent to their suffering.

Political Fragmentation and Civil War

As public trust eroded, social unrest grew. Riots became commonplace, and the administration responded with martial law, treating its own citizens like criminals. States like Texas and California eventually seceded, igniting a bloody civil war that fractured the nation further. During this period, basic services collapsed: schools, hospitals, and law enforcement could no longer function reliably. Citizens were left to fend for themselves, and violent gangs quickly filled the void. By the early 2000s, the U.S. was no longer a unified nation but a collection of fractured territories ruled by militias, gangs, and corporate interests.

Environmental and Social Crises

The political and economic turmoil was compounded by environmental disasters. A devastating drought crippled agriculture, crop plagues spread famine, and a massive earthquake in Los Angeles destroyed key infrastructure. Global pandemics and the wasting plague decimated populations, leaving millions dead. The federal government’s inability to respond effectively deepened public despair. Citizens were increasingly alienated, and survival became a daily struggle for the majority of the population.

Rise of the NUSA

From the remnants of the old United States emerged the New United States of America (NUSA), a weak, dictatorial state dominated by corporate-aligned leaders. Though it claimed authority over former territories, its power was largely symbolic. Real control lay in the hands of mega-corporations, who dictated commerce, security, and technology. The NUSA could enforce laws selectively, primarily to protect corporate interests rather than public welfare.

🏢 The Corporate Wars and the Ascent of Corpos

With governments weakened, mega-corporations filled the vacuum, effectively becoming sovereign states with private armies, intelligence networks, and legal systems tailored to their needs. Corporations no longer just influenced society—they ruled it.

Corporations as States

In this new order, corporations operated as de facto countries. They fought over market dominance, resources, and influence, often resorting to full-scale warfare. These conflicts, known as Corporate Wars, were fought globally and in cyberspace, leaving entire cities and regions devastated. Corporate loyalty replaced national identity; laws and borders became secondary to profit and survival.

The Fourth Corporate War (2021–2025)

The most destructive of these conflicts was the Fourth Corporate War, primarily fought between Arasaka and Militech, the world’s largest security and arms conglomerates.

  • The Initial Conflict: It began over the assets of a bankrupt aquatech company, drawing Militech (backed by OTEC) and Arasaka (backed by CINO) into a deadly confrontation.
  • Escalation: The rivalry quickly became personal, spreading to global battlefields and cyberspace. The DataKrash event wiped out much of the pre-existing Net, leaving hackers and corporations scrambling to rebuild cyberspace infrastructure.
  • Night City Nuked: The war reached its peak in 2023 when a Militech-backed strike team, led by Johnny Silverhand, detonated a tactical nuclear device inside Arasaka Tower in Night City. Over half a million people were killed, downtown was obliterated, and the skies turned a permanent radioactive red, ushering in the infamous Time of the Red.

Aftermath and Corporate Control

In the war’s aftermath, the NUSA president, a former Militech CEO, attempted to consolidate power by nationalizing Militech and expelling Arasaka from U.S. soil. However, these measures were largely symbolic. The NUSA remained too weak to truly govern, leaving mega-corporations as the de facto rulers. The lines between government and private industry blurred, cementing a world where corporate logos, not flags, dictate authority.

⚡ Consequences of the Fall

The combined impact of the U.S. Collapse and the Corporate Wars created a world that is fractured, violent, and heavily stratified.

  • Corporate Dominance: Mega-corporations became the ultimate authority, controlling media, technology, labor, and military power. Influence and survival depended on who wielded the most resources and the best technology.
  • Government Impotence: National governments, including the NUSA, are weak, corrupt, and largely irrelevant. They exist as hollow institutions that maintain the illusion of order while real power lies elsewhere.
  • A Broken World: Society is fractured, and the planet suffers from environmental decay, radioactive zones, and widespread lawlessness. Most citizens exist in cycles of poverty, crime, and desperation, where “chrome” and personal augmentation determine survival.

This combination of political failure, corporate overreach, and technological escalation sets the stage for Cyberpunk 2077. Night City is the living embodiment of these historical events—a neon-lit dystopia where power, survival, and ambition collide at every street corner. Understanding the fall of the old world not only contextualizes the game’s narrative but also highlights the delicate balance between technology, power, and humanity.

Night City and the Cyberpunk universe are cautionary tales. They show what happens when institutions fail, corporations rise unchecked, and technology outpaces morality. The Collapse reminds us that in a world dominated by profit and ambition, the human cost is often immeasurable, and survival depends on adaptability, cunning, and sometimes ruthlessness.
